Activities of United Netherlands United Netherlands offers the following knowledge and skill-based educational programs.
National Delegation to Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) Every year, United Netherlands selects a group of highly motivated and talented students out of large pool of national applicants to participate in the challenging preparatory course United Nations and Multilateral Diplomacy: Theory and Practice (UNMD). This course, which has an admissions procedure, is a theoretical and practical introduction to multilateral diplomacy and, more generally, tries to equip students with the academic, problem solving, strategic and communicative skills necessary to tackle global challenges successfully. Participating students are not only educated in the fundamentals of international law, politics, and economics, but are also taught a broad range of practical skills such as lobbying, negotiating, and public speaking. In addition, personal effectiveness and group dynamics are an important theme throughout the program. After 18 weeks of preparations in the Netherlands and one intensive training week in New York, the students are ready for the highlight of this course: the Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) in Boston. This course is unique in its kind in The Netherlands and its quality is guaranteed by the 10 ECTS (Bachelor 3 level) accredited by the Radboud University Nijmegen and the repeated successes booked by United Netherlands. delegations in Oxford and Harvard. Radboud international Model United Nations (RiMUN) United Netherlands organizes an international Model United Nations for university teams from all over the world. RiMUN's mission is to pursue practical knowledge of international relations among students in a competitive setting with a focus on content and reflection. By placing the topics of the conference in an ethical, philosophical, and academic context, RiMUN aims to promote reflection among the participating students. This unique feature, that aims at creating a balance between idealism and realism, sets RiMUN apart from other MUNs. For more information on previous conferences, please see the RiMUN website. Instead of RiMUN 2009, United Netherlands will be organizing WorldMUN 2009. RiMUN will once again be organized in 2010. We hope to see you there! Month of the United Nations The Month of the United Nations (MOTUN) is a bi-annual, intensive four week course with lectures and trainings in international relations, -politics, -economics, -law and public speaking, negotiating, lobbying and resolution writing. This will give students an insight in the world of international diplomacy. United Netherlands High School Program After two pilot programs, United Netherlands is proud to launch the official High School Program in 2008-2009. Via the High School Program, United Netherlands brings the experience and knowledge of her alumni to high school students. Over the course of three days, high school students are trained like diplomats in a program that is derived from United Netherlands' preparatory track to Harvard National Model United Nations. After these days, the high school students participate in a Model United Nations conference organized by United Netherlands on the university campus of the Radboud University. Throughout the program, high school students will learn about international diplomacy and the United Nations, but they will also learn and improve various valuable skills such as public speaking and the ability to cooperate effectively. United Netherlands ensures the quality of the program by only using certified trainers that have enjoyed extensive training in the skills that they will be teaching. Additionally, all the trainers have participated in renowned MUN-conferences such as OxiMUN (Oxford University) and HNMUN (Harvard University). The program is designed to be fun and accessible, while making sure that it also challenges students and allows them to learn and develop themselves as global citizens. Symposia Finally, United Netherlands aims to organize one or two symposia each year where high level quality speakers give acte de présence. The symposia focus on current and challenging topics and offer a platform for dialogue. 2008-2009 On October 23rd, 2008, United Netherlands hosted renowned philosopher Avishai Margalit, philosopher Oscar van den Wijngaard and Mr. Mariwan Kanie. In a discussion that centered around "Occidentalism and the Media" students were stimulated to reflect on the importance of this topic and its effect on current international relations and conflicts. 2007-2008 In December 2007, United Netherlands organized a symposium, in cooperation with Soeterbeeck Programme, where students discussed the new Human Rights strategy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Verhagen. 2005-2006 At the first United Netherlands symposium on the 26th of May 2005 former prime minister Dries van Agt and minister Alexander Pechtold spoke about the meaning of 'courage' in our modern society. |
