Frequently asked questions

Should I have a specific academic background, such as Political Science or Public Administration, to become a United Netherlands delegate?
No. Participation in the United Netherlands delegation and preparatory track is open to university students who are interested in international relations, politics and the United Nations regardless of their academic background.

Do I have to be a student of a university in the Netherlands to become a delegate?
Yes. The preparatory track is an academic course that is open to university students only. If you study at a Dutch university until at least the end of the conference (end of February), you are eligible to apply.

I applied for the United Netherlands delegation last year but did not get through the selection rounds. Can I apply again this year?
Yes, you can. Just follow the normal application instructions and be sure to send in an updated resume.

Will the study credits be transferable to my university and will it be possible to use it in my curriculum?
The Radboud University has accredited the UNMD course with 10 ECTS at a Bachelor 3 level. Regardless of Radboud University accreditation, it is up to universities themselves to award credits to the program. It is up to you to arrange that with your study coordinator. The United Netherlands board will be happy to assist you in any way we can. It depends on your academic program whether you will be able to use this course in your curriculum. We advise you to contact your study coordinator beforehand to discuss this.

Is it mandatory to participate in other Model United Nations conferences, such as Oxford or Amsterdam, when I become a United Netherlands delegate?
No. Other MUN conferences in which United Netherlands participates are only meant to better prepare delegates for the Harvard conference. As a delegate, however, you are strongly advised to practice your debating and negotiating skills by taking part in any of these other MUNs.

Why does United Netherlands attend the Harvard National MUN and not another conference in the United States?
Harvard National MUN, with 3000 participants, is the oldest and most prestigious Model United Nations conference in the world. HNMUN is considered to be the ultimate experience in the collegiate MUN circuit.

Is it necessary to have participated in Model United Nations conferences in the past?
No. However, if you have never been to MUN conferences before, we strongly suggest that you participate in other MUNs during the preparatory track in order to gain more experience. United Netherlands organizes it's own Model UN conference: RiMUN. This is an excellent opportunity to for you to gain some experience before the course. As UNL delegate however, you are excluded from participation in RiMUN. You can participate in other conferences during the prep track such as UNISCA.

What countries will United Netherlands represent?
This is decided by the staff of the MUN conference. During Harvard National MUN 2008, United Netherlands represented France. In 2007 China and Romania were represented. In the past, United Netherlands has also been assigned for example South Africa, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Japan, the United States of America and the Russian Federation. Since one of the goals of MUN is to experience other cultural and political viewpoints, United Netherlands delegates will not represent the Netherlands at any conference.

I would like to contribute to the United Netherlands organization. What could I do?
We are always looking for people who could contribute to the organization. If you have ideas for the preparatory track, media and press related issues, or if you have suggestions for cooperation between United Netherlands and other organizations, do not hesitate to contact us. You could also apply for a position on the United Netherlands board.
