“Idealism meets pragmatism in education for young global citizens!”

On the 16th of April 2010, about 70 motivated international students from 4 different high schools gathered in Nijmegen on the Radboud University Campus to take part in the High School Program Model United Nations (HSP-MUN) Conference, organized by United Netherlands. The participating schools came from various regions in the Netherlands and included the NATO-aligned AFNORTH International School. The conference revolved around the theme “Citizens in Conflict”, more precisely the crucial role played by citizens who find themselves involved in raging conflict. In light of this topic the excited students took part in a number of on-the-spot training sessions to learn how to think and act as real UN diplomats on the day of the HSP conference.

The HSPMUN 2010 started off with an official Opening Ceremony at the Campus Aula were a lecture was given by Hans Rouw of IKV Pax Christi. The lecture was then followed by a debate which gave students the chance to express their own opinion (instead of the country position they would have to represent later as diplomats in the Model United Nations committees).

The young diplomats then joined three special MUN committees, each with a different topic: “War and Drugs in Colombia” in the UN General Assembly Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, “Child Soldiers” in the UN General Assembly Disarmament and International Security Committee, and “Responsibility to Protect in Somalia” in the UN Security Council. During the lunch break students were given a brief opportunity to relax their serious minds and interact with the students from other schools whilst having fun and listening to live music performed by the band “Taipé” from Utrecht.

After a good number of intensive debating hours all tired but happy students then attended the much anticipated Closing Ceremony where individual committee awards and one big school award would be presented. AFNORTH International School won the award but all schools and their students did their very best and performed incredibly well. We, the United Netherlands team, are very proud of them and their significant development in the MUN field over such a short period of time. Following the United Netherlands motto, the students worked hard, but also played hard!

United Netherlands is een stichting met als missie het creëren van een platform waar getalenteerde, gemotiveerde & jonge mensen elkaar kunnen uitdagen om hun volledig potentieel als wereldburgers te ontwikkelen.

Wij realiseren dit onder andere door ons High School Program. Dit programma bestaat uit drie trainingsdagen op de eigen school en een eendaagse afsluitende VN simulatie op de campus van de Radboud Universiteit. Het programma is geheel Engelstalig. Hieronder kunt u een korte beschrijving vinden waarin wordt uitgelegd wat een VN Simulatie inhoudt. VN Simulaties: leren op een MUN

VN simulaties, ook wel Model United Nations (MUN's) genoemd, zijn conferenties waar de Verenigde Naties worden nagespeeld. Deelnemers kruipen in de huid van diplomaten, om als vertegenwoordiger van het aan hen toegewezen land te vergaderen over wereldproblemen.

Het MUN concept is kort na de oprichting van de Verenigde Naties uitgewerkt door Harvard en universiteiten in New York. In de Angelsaksische wereld zijn deze conferenties traditioneel al populair, maar ook in de rest van de wereld neemt de belangstelling gestaag toe.

MUN's passen zo goed in het ontwikkelingsproces van jongeren omdat er zoveel verschillende vaardigheden bij komen kijken. Deze vaardigheden komen allemaal samen in de praktijk van een MUN, waardoor het de ideale plaats is voor leerlingen om elkaar en zichzelf op een leuke manier uit te dagen.

Op een dergelijke conferentie zullen leerlingen gebruik kunnen maken van hun kennis, beheersing van het Engels, sociale vaardigheden, vermogen om te spreken in het openbaar, onderhandelingskwaliteiten, (zelf)reflectie en creativiteit.

In het United Netherlands High School Program zullen leerlingen in al deze facetten van hun ontwikkeling worden gestimuleerd. United Netherlands en haar trainers zijn zeer ervaren waar het MUN's betreft, wat het leerproces van uw scholieren vergemakkelijkt. U kunt meer over onze ervaring vinden op de volgende pagina.
