Formal Requirements

Any student (Dutch and international) who is registered from September 2010 to February 2011 at a Dutch university may apply. If you have graduated recently, it is still possible to participate but you will need to register at Radboud University for this particular course, which involves some costs. (You can also choose to remain registered at your own institution until February.)

Who Are We Looking For?

Most importantly, we are looking for students who combine ambition with ideals. We ask students to be open to personal growth and willing to work towards this aim in the area of international diplomacy. Any student (Dutch and international) who is registered at a Dutch university may apply.

Hence, an applicant should have a clear idea of what he or she wants to achieve with his or her actions and have a drive to make a contribution to the quality of life of others. Also, he or she should have the motivation and discipline to work hard and in particular be willing to put sufficient time and effort into the United Netherlands program.

A successful applicant will have strong problem solving skills to deal with the complex issues in international relations and will have strategic insight to be able to successfully deal with collective decision making. Moreover, he or she will be able to persuade other people and thus have some public speaking, debating, and lobbying skills. Finally, because group decision processes are a very social activity and we want the delegation to be a real team; a successful applicant thus has to possess good social skills.

We do not require any specific background or education. Of course, any signs that you have affinity with the UN and its ideals will be an advantage and a sufficient command of the English language is a prerequisite. We strive to end up with a diverse and balanced group of some of the best students in the Netherlands.

Costs

Participation Fee

If you are accepted to the delegation, we will require that you pay a participation fee of 250 Euros for the program. This fee is your contribution to a highly rewarding program. It is not used to cover any personal costs you should make, such as travel expenses. It ensures that admitted students are committed to complete the demanding program.

Please note: If you are expelled from the course or if you decide to withdraw, the participation fee shall not be refunded. The only exception is, of course, when your withdrawal is related to serious health problems or grave personal circumstances in which case you will get the participation fee refunded insofar as costs for the course have not yet been incurred.

Other expenditures

Obviously, travelling to the United Kingdom and the United States of America for two weeks is not for free! Tickets, accommodation and food will cost you approximately 1800 Euros. Expenditures for leisure activities vary from person to person. When in New York and Boston, you will probably want to see some museums and go out a couple of times. Similarly, if you want to do any extravagant things (first row in Broadway, Knick's game etc.) costs will be higher.

Also, keep in mind that apart from the trip, you might incur traveling costs to Nijmegen and you may want to join us for dinner after the Friday meetings.

Financial support

Fortunately, there are good possibilities for financial support. Foremost, most universities will give you a substantial amount. Our board can help you find the right body in your university. Of course, you are free to search for any additional sources of financial support. If you start, right after you have been selected to our delegation you will have ample time to acquire funds for the trip.
