BCG Workshop 2008 Although since February we as fresh UNL alumni had had quite a number of opportunities to see each other at parties and the like, the workshop at BCG was the first time to meet them in a professional setting again. Many of us nearing the end of ours studies, I myself right in the middle of the process of looking for a suitable job to start my career, the workshop was the ideal chance to get to know the strategy consultancy business. What struck me directly at BCG was the openness. Not only of the very modern, brand new offices, but maybe even more of the people; the workshop started with a lunch at which several of BCG's consultants where present, and all of us had very interesting conversations about life as a consultant. After lunch, we received an introduction to BCG and consulting by one of the pricipals, which was very enlightening. We were then introduced to our real task for the day; we had to crack a case about an ice-cream producer wanting to expand. We were split up in teams, and asked to present an advice under quite some time pressure and with a limited amount of information. All three teams managed to come op with original solutions, and in the process we got quite a good idea about what work as a consulted is like: hard but very rewarding... BCG Workshop with United Netherlands, 05-06-2007
"Excited to see everyone from UNL again at the BCG Strategy workshop (the Harvard conference - HNMUN - was just a couple of weeks ago), I was thrilled at the possibility of meeting the people of BCG and experiencing the daily life of a consultant." "I was particularly interested in how consultants work, and in order to get a deeper insight BCG demonstrated a confidential, real-life case about whether or not we should advise a company to enter a potential market. Then, the floor was ours. In five teams we were to crack a business case, advising a company on which market to enter given the various options in front of us and the information provided and, of course, our own creativity. Teamwork was essential. The process of building a sound advice together required all participants to think in steps, taking into account different criteria instead of jumping to solutions as one so frequently does. It was mainly this quality, that I had strengthened during my time at UNL, that proved to be extremely useful during the strategy workshop. Needless to say, I enjoyed every bit of it." "UNL prepares individuals to develop their personal skills while stressing the importance of teamwork and cooperation. I am personally very glad that I was able to be part of UNL and even happier that the knowledge learnt there still applies in daily as well as professional circumstances, as was demonstrated throughout the BCG workshop." |
